Jorge Lopez Triumphs with Mono-Green Landfall at Mexico's Regional Championship

This past weekend, 180 of the best Magic players from across Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean gathered in Mexico City for their Regional Championship, the culmination of months of qualifying events in the Central America Magic Series.

180 players gathered in Mexico City to do battle across two days of Standard.

Not only were there four Pro Tour invitations on the line, but players were also competing for the title of Regional Champion and a seat at Magic World Championship 32. After eight rounds of Standard competition followed by a Top 8 playoff, Jorge Lopez claimed the trophy!

Congratulations to Jorge Lopez, winner of the Regional Championship for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean!

The finals featured a Mono-Green Landfall mirror match between Lopez and Ivan Saenz. Mono-Green Landfall was the most-played deck in the field, but the finalists' builds differed substantially. Lopez relied on the more traditional core of Icetill Explorer, Mightform Harmonizer, and Sapling Nursey. Saenz paired Michelangelo, Weirdness to 11 from Magic: The Gathering® | Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles with Bristly Bill, Spine Sower and Innkeeper's Talent.

The traditional foil copies of Innkeeper's Talent that were awarded to the Top Finishers may have bolstered Saenz's confidence in his +1/+1 counter strategy before the finals. Nevertheless, Lopez ultimately claimed the title, locking up an invitation to Magic World Championship 32.

The Top 4 players, whose Standard decklists featured Jeskai Control and Dimir Midrange, earned invites to Pro Tour Secrets of Strixhaven. That event will be held at MagicCon: Las Vegas in May 2026, where they may proudly represent their region.

Half of the Top 8 was comprised of Dimir decks, though they all came in different variations. Dimir Midrange used cheap evasive creatures to ninjutsu out Kaito, Bane of Nightmares. Dimir Excruciator aimed to deck the opponent with Doomsday Excruciator and Insatiable Avarice. Finally, Dimir Deceit aimed to copy creatures like its namesake Deceit or Oildeep Gearhulk with Superior Spider-Man.

Awesome prizes could be earned in the side events.

It was a terrific weekend full of hard-fought matches, high-level competition, and opportunities to celebrate everything about Magic, including side events and cosplay. The Central America Magic Series put on display the talent and skill of players from across the region, propelling the best players to Magic's highest stages. Once again, congratulations to Jorge Lopez, the new Regional Champion!
