It was a busy weekend in the world of tabletop Magic on February 21–22 as North America lit up with Standard action from Milwaukee in the east to Vancouver in the west. With almost 1,200 players in the United States and another 240 in Canada, it was a truly massive showcase of Magic.
In Canada, the Regional Championship was won by Neilson Zhang, who mastered Dimir Midrange through a field full of successful Mono-Green Landfall players.

But when Dimir Midrange is good, Standard is great—and the Dimir mastermind who won the Regional Championship in Canada on February 21–22 is great at Standard. Neilson Zhang dropped his first round but then reeled off an incredible run at the Regional Championship. Zhang's highly tuned Dimir list was unstoppable on Day Two and only dropped a single game in the Top 8 on his way to the trophy.
The Top 8 in Vancouver featured a lot of Mono-Green Landfall, as the deck's big weekend in North America continued. Four players made it to the Top 8 with the deck, including Zhang's finals opponent, January Adams.
More than 200 competitors were in attendance for a massive meetup of Canada's Magic community. It represented the best chance to achieve their dream of qualifying for the Pro Tour—not to mention that the Regional Championship itself carries some very serious prizes.
Mono-Green Landfall was among the most successful archetypes. In addition to its Top 8 prevalence, the deck helped the most players qualify for Day Two. But even that must be taken with a grain of salt, given that nearly half of the Day Two field qualified on a decklist that belonged in the "other" category.
It was a fabulously diverse metagame that Zhang cut through. Like the US Regional Champion, his run to the Top 8 showcased that diversity. He faced just two repeat decks on Day One, and his Top 8 path threw three extremely different challenges at him in the form of Azorius Tempo, Izzet Elementals, and Mono-Green Landfall in the finals.
With his victory, Zhang earned a Regional Championship trophy and a coveted invitation to Magic World Championship 32. Congrats to all the Regional Championship players, and don't miss the next Regional Championship in your area!
